Recycling FAQ’s

Q: How should I handle ABC bottle recycling?

A: To assist with staging materials outside for pick up, OCS provides five 64 gallon carts on wheels which may be used inside then rolled out for collection once full.  This allows the establishment to eliminate the need for employees to carry or empty heavy recycle bags into a dumpster.

Q: What about odors?

A: A few key strategies to reduce odors are to remove recyclables to well ventilated or external storage areas as quickly as possible.  Also, ensure there are no food wastes in the containers as they contribute to odors and the recycling facility will reject loads with food waste.

Q: How can I make our recycling program successful?

A: Successful business recycling programs rely on the awareness and active participation of employees.  If you are attempting to initiate a recycling program you should consider these techniques for engaging employees:

  1. Top down commitment- Clear and visible support for the recycling effort by business owners and management set the tone and standard for success.
  2. Designate a leader- Having one or a few leaders (example, one per shift) of the recycling effort is one way to get organized.  A motivated and enthusiastic leader can make the difference between a poor effort and one that works efficiently.
  3. Conduct basic training- If possible, assemble employees for a brief training before implementation of recycling efforts.  Topics that need to be covered include:
  • Why the recycling program is being established
  • What materials are targeted  for recycling
  • How and what kind of separation is necessary
  • The need to avoid contaminating recyclables with food or other wastes
  • How to handle materials inside and out
